The Sims 4 Family Dynamics: What is it? (explanation)

With the Growing Up Together expansion, a lot of new content has been included in The Sims 4. Family dynamics is one of the most recent game mechanics added to the game. This radically changes the interaction system in the game and how you interact with your siblings. But due to this newly added feature, some players don’t understand how they work. Don’t worry, check out our guide that explains what family dynamics are in The Sims 4.

Understanding Family Dynamics in The Sims 4 Growing Up Together

As the name suggests, Family Dynamics are a set of options that represent the bonds and relationships between Sims in Sims 4. You can change Family Dynamics to create an easier or more difficult playthrough. Your bonded Sims interact and behave with each other according to the family dynamic you have chosen for them.

So, here are all the family dynamics options you can choose from:

  • Close
  • Far
  • supportive
  • permissive
  • Difficult
  • Strict
  • jokes

From the dynamics above, you could get an idea of this new Sims system. Once you change the family dynamic of any given Sim, it will change their social interactions. For example, if two Sims are condescending, the younger one tends to be more demanding than the older one. A parent with a permissive family dynamic will give their child more freedom than a parent with a strict family dynamic.

You can change or set up a new family dynamic by going to the Create-a-Sim (CAS) menu. In addition, you can also create and develop them as you progress.

How do they work

So let’s take a look at each family dynamic and how they work in more detail:

  • Close
    • Two Sims with this family dynamic are happy and love each other.
    • They share an intimate relationship and share deep thoughts more often.
  • Far
    • Two Sims with this dynamic usually prefer short conversations and interact less.
  • supportive
    • Both Sims feel comfortable and share things with each other.
    • If the sims are of different ages, the older sim will be more thoughtful and will complement the younger one more.
  • permissive
    • As mentioned earlier, this family dynamic gives Sims extra space and freedom.
    • The older Sim tends to give more freedom to the younger one.
  • Difficult
    • Adding a complex layer to the family dynamic, Sims with this dynamic exchange abusive and rude interactions with each other.
  • Strict
    • In contrast to the permissive family dynamic, the older Sim is more demanding and demands discipline from the younger.
    • While younger Sims respect older Sims because of this dynamic, they can easily get stressed out during interactions.
  • jokes
    • Two Sims who share this dynamic will always have fun and play pranks on each other.
