Twitter, now renamed to X, has received several new features ever since it was acquired by Elon Musk to realize his goal of creating a new ‘everything’ app. However, as a result of these changes, many users have now started running into issues where Twitter is not working on their iPhone or iPad.
If you’re also facing a similar issue, don’t worry! In this guide, I will show you a handful of easy ways you can get Twitter to work again on your devices.
- Force close and relaunch Twitter app on iPhone
- Restart your iPhone
- Check for network-related issues
- Check if Twitter is down
- Ensure Twitter can access cellular data
- Turn off VPN
- Turn off Data Saver in Twitter
- Logout and re-login to Twitter
- Update or reinstall Twitter
- Access Twitter from web browser
- Check for system updates
- Reset Network Settings on your device
1. Force close and relaunch Twitter app on iPhone
Often, temporary software glitches within some apps can cause them to malfunction. However, most of the time, these glitches can be fixed quite easily by just force quitting and relaunching the app, as detailed below.
- Open the App Switcher on your iPhone.
- Swipe up on the Twitter (X) app to close it.
- Then, reopen Twitter (X) to see if it’s working correctly.
2. Restart your iPhone
In most cases, relaunching the app should allow you to resolve the issues you’re facing. However, if that doesn’t help, you might want to restart your device. Doing this will power down your device and possibly help you clear out software glitches that could prevent apps from working as expected.
- Open the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap and enable Airplane mode for a few seconds → Then turn off Airplane Mode.
4. Check if Twitter is down
Sometimes, it might not be the Twitter app that’s causing the issues but the server it’s connected to. It’s common for many online services to have their servers go offline for maintenance or when they run into a technical snag.
If you’re unsure about Twitter’s server status, you can always visit Twitter’s official status page or websites like DownDetector.com to verify the same.
5. Ensure Twitter can access cellular data
Are you able to use Twitter on your devices when you’re connected to Wi-Fi but only run into issues where Twitter can’t work when using cellular data? If yes, you must verify if it has access to cellular data from the Settings app.
- Open the Settings app on your device → Select Cellular.
- Scroll down and toggle on Twitter (X).
6. Turn off VPN
VPNs offer a great way to mask your digital footprint and protect your data from the websites you visit. However, using VPNs often introduces network latency, which can interfere with Twitter, causing it to malfunction. Hence, you must turn off VPN on your iPhone or iPad before using Twitter again.
- If you’ve configured a VPN manually, go to Settings → toggle off VPN.
- If you use any other VPN service, open the VPN app → tap Disconnect.
7. Turn off Data Saver in Twitter
Twitter has a Data Saver feature that lets you reduce its data consumption. However, sometimes, this feature can prevent certain items from loading up on your feed. Hence, you must turn this feature off to see if that helps.
- Open Twitter (X) → Tap your profile picture in the top left.
- Tap Settings and Support → Settings and privacy.
- Go to Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage.
- Toggle off Data Saver.
8. Logout and re-login to Twitter
Glitches with your Twitter login credentials can also prevent its app from working correctly. If you think this is causing the issue on your device, you can try logging out and logging in to see if that does the trick for you.
- Open Twitter (X) → Tap your profile picture in the top left.
- Tap Settings and Support → Settings and privacy.
- Tap Your account → Account information → Log out.
- Select your preferred method to re-login to Twitter (X).
9. Update or reinstall Twitter
Unfixed software glitches in Twitter’s app can also prevent it from working as expected. The only sure-shot way you can resolve this issue is to update the Twitter app to the latest version or reinstall it if an update isn’t available.
- Open the App Store → Tap your profile picture at the top right corner.
- Scroll down and check if an update for Twitter (X) is available.
If no update is available, you must reinstall Twitter as I’ve detailed below:
- Tap and hold Twitter’s app icon on the Home Screen.
- Then, tap Remove App → Delete App → Delete.
- Open the App Store → Go to the Search tab → Search for Twitter (X).
- Tap the blue cloud icon beside the Twitter (X) icon.
10. Access Twitter from web browser
Many times, bugs within Twitter (X) can indefinitely prevent it from working on your iPhone or iPad. If you suspect that this is what’s causing the issue, you should try to access Twitter’s web version using either Safari or any other third-party web browsers that may be available on your device.
11. Check for system updates
Bugs in iOS/iPadOS can also prevent some apps from working for you. If you think that’s the case with your iPhone or iPad, follow these steps to check if Apple has issued a software update with relevant patches to fix the issue.
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update.
- Tap Update Now if an update is available.
12. Reset Network Settings on your device
If none of the fixes that were mentioned earlier work out for you, there might be some issue with your network settings, which could prevent Twitter from connecting to the internet. In such cases, you will have to reset the network settings on your device, as detailed in the steps below, to see if that helps.
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your iPhone’s passcode.
- Tap Reset Network Settings again to complete the process.
