Samsung also has a screen that folds in both directions. Flex In-N-Out can even be built into the Galaxy Fold 5.
At this year’s CES, Samsung Display showcased some cool foldable and/or stretchable display ideas. However, one promising innovation was somewhat overlooked. According to The Verge, Samsung Display also had a Flex-In-N-Out display in its boxes, a foldable display with a new type of hinge that allows the user to bend it in and out.

The Samsung Display PR team explains that this screen folds and unfolds 360° for “maximum user experience,” with an aspect ratio that can be changed depending on what you’re viewing on the screen.
The Verge has a few more details, especially to explain why this slab is so thick. According to the American blog, the loop is different from the one used in the first version of Flex In-N-Out, introduced in 2021. It uses a waterdrop design that applies less pressure to greatly reduce the creases often seen on screens like the Galaxy Z Fold 4. It also folds flatter than built into smartphones currently available from Samsung..
Flex In-N-Out can even be built into the Galaxy Fold 5.
A recent report claimed that the South Korean giant would use such a hinge in its highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 5. This could mean that this new folding-screen smartphone will not only have less noticeable creases, but can also flex to both sides.
This brings us back to the very first folding screen smartphones we’ve seen. In 2019, Samsung’s first-of-its-kind Galaxy Fold featured an inward-folding screen. Huawei’s first model, the Huawei Mate X, which was released later that year, featured an outward-curving screen, which caused a lot of controversy. And finally, we could get the best of both worlds with two in one.
