After weeks of rumors and rumors, Ubisoft has finally confirmed that Ubisoft Toronto has started development on the Splinter Cell remake and is currently hiring. The original was one of the most influential stealth action games and defined the key characteristics of stealth action for years to come.
Splinter Cell is one of Ubisoft’s biggest AAA franchises, so it only makes sense for them to go back to their roots when the market is ripe for remakes. Developers Ubisoft Toronto also shared a small Q&A that sheds more light on the direction Splinter Cell will take and what players can expect from the game.
Splinter Cell remake confirmed by Ubisoft
For starters, the developers have confirmed that the Splinter Cell remake will use its own Snowdrop engine. This is the same engine that is currently being used to develop Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora as well as the upcoming Ubisoft Star Wars game. The developers also confirmed that the “remake”implies that the team will go beyond the “remaster”.
“Snowdrop is a proven modern AAA engine. This provides an opportunity for content creators and programmers to quickly try something, see what works, and ultimately succeed,” said Peter Handrinos of Ubisoft Toronto. “I think that’s one of its main strengths, allowing us to quickly find a modern equivalent to Splinter’s core gameplay.”
The game is being developed from the ground up and while it will retain the identity and spirit of the original, players can expect a ton of innovation in terms of technology, visuals and gameplay. From what the devs have been saying about the stealth gameplay in the remake, we’ll be keeping a lot of the sandboxing of the original and allowing players to make some interesting choices.
Splinter Cell Blacklist was the first game that Ubisoft Toronto released, so it seems the remake is in good hands as they are quite familiar with what a modern Splinter Cell game should be.
