Pebble smartwatches are getting a new update. 10 years after its launch, 4 years after the last software release, Pixel 7 compatibility is getting closer.
It’s been almost 10 years since Pebble smartwatches hit the wrists of early adopters following an incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign. And yet today, those connected watches are still alive and well. The watch is now compatible with Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. Only 64-bit Android devices will be supported soon.
Pebble smartwatches get a new update
As explained by Ars Technica, Katherine Berry, who works on Wear OS and is an important member of the Rebble team responsible for maintaining the Pebble ecosystem, wrote that the latest Pebble update comes four years after the previous one. This release allowed many features of the Pebble apps to run on independent servers. Fitbit, which has since been acquired by Google, shut down Pebble’s servers in 2018, just two years after buying all of the watchmaker’s assets.
10 years after launch, 4 years after the release of the latest software version, compatibility with Pixel 7 will appear.
In addition to being compatible with the Pixel 7, the latest update also improves the reliability of number representation in the latest versions of Android. While the app is not available on the Google Play Store, the APK is signed with official Pebble keys and retains Google Fit integration, as Katherine Berry explains.
At first glance, this update may seem like Pebble’s last in terms of official support. “Thanks to Google for providing us with the final update,” Katherine Berry wrote on Reddit, among others. However, the Pebble hackathon is due next month. If the e-ink screen and battery of your Pebble smartwatch are still working, the watch can be of use to you.
