MW2 Ranked SR Levels, Skill Divisions and Ranks (explained)

Season 2 of MW2 introduced a new ranked play mode with custom levels and progression from SR. This type of ranked competitive mode has existed in previous CoD games. This one, however, is well thought out and refined, in addition to being balanced. Let’s take a closer look at how ranked play works in MW2.

All the Details on SR Ranked Play Tiers, Skill Divisions and Ranks in MW2

With so many good improvements made over the latest iteration of ranking in CoD Vanguard, such as the addition of SR (skill rating), there’s a lot to learn about the new ranked game system and its rules. Here’s everything you need to know about ranked play in MW2.

How to play ranked game in MW2?

First of all, in order to start playing a ranked game, you need to be level 16 or higher. This is to prevent new players who are not familiar with the game from playing. They will not be able to play if they are not well versed in the game.

This is also for people who create alternative accounts, they will not be able to just create an account and immediately start playing ranked play in the starting Bronze division. Once you reach level 16, you can simply access ranked play through the main menu.

What are the rules and regulations for ranked play in MW2?

In ranked play, everything is unlocked and there are no level requirements to use any weapon or its attachments. This is to create a level and balanced playing field so that no player is blocked from using any type of equipment. Even the new weapons that come with the new season are unlocked with all the attachments you can collect gear from.

You might think that you can just do all your battleloads in ranked play if everything is unlocked, right? Well, not quite. Certain weapons are prohibited in ranked play, as are certain attachments.

This list even includes items such as throwables, field upgrades, and killstreaks. For example, the most notable thing that is prohibited in a ranked game is jammers. Even the most popular AR, M4, is banned.

Ranked play in MW2 is 4v4 and only has 3 game modes that spawn randomly and can’t be filtered like quick play. These 3 modes are Hardpoint, Control and Search & Destroy.

How does SR work for ranked play in MW2?

While the SR level system has existed in other competitive multiplayer games as well, this is a new addition to the CoD series. Generally, your SR ranks in MW2 increase when you win and decrease when you lose. But there are other factors that determine how much SR you gain or lose. The factors that affect SR are basically your game and what you were able to achieve in the match.

However, the more you advance in ranked play and its SR divisions, the more it matters how your entire team performs, not just one player. This is because at higher SR levels, team play is rewarded more rather than the player with the most kills or the player with the most objective games, etc.

How do ranked gaming divisions work?

Listed below are all skill sections and their respective SRs required:

  • Bronze: 0 – 899 CP
  • Silver: 900 – 2099 SR.
  • Gold: 2100–3599 SR.
  • Platinum: 3600–5399 SR.
  • Diamond: 5400–7499 CP.
  • Raspberry: 7,500 – 9,999 CP
  • Rainbow: 10,000 SR
  • Top 250: 10,000+ SR (based on leaderboard position)

For each skill division mentioned above, there are 3 levels that you must pass through in order to advance to the next division. For example, a silver level has Silver level 1, Silver level 2, and Silver level 3.

However, the three-tier system only applies up to Crimson Division. Rainbow is technically the last division. You will only advance if you place in the top 250 this season.

In the next season, you will start 1 skill division below your previous one at the end of the previous season. For example, if you were at Gold level 2, then next season you will start at Silver level 2.

How do ranks work in ranked play and what do they do?

Ranked play is a separate type of progression. They have no real connection to your SR and Skill Division ranks in MW2. Everyone starts at rank 1, for a total of 50 ranks.

To move up the ranks, you must earn stars. It works like this: stars are earned by winning a ranked match. After earning enough stars, you move on to the next rank.

Ranks are not taken into account when selecting players. Your ranks are just a way to get a sense of how you progress in ranked play. The ranks also do not change depending on the season.

You also cannot lose ranks and can only gain them until you reach rank 50. Ranks are intended to determine your progress in ranked games and reflect how many of them you have played. You can also get certain rewards at certain ranks, which makes it interesting to get victories to increase your rank beyond your SR.
