Qualcomm is introducing its new X70 5G modem with an AI chip to improve signal processing, especially in mmWave.
At MWC 2022, Qualcomm announced the Qualcomm X70 5G next-generation 5G modem, which will be a direct successor to the X65 model released last year. This new X70 5G offers the same top speed as the X65, namely the X65, but Qualcomm has done a lot to improve the average speed, which is ultimately a much more important metric in the real world and in everyday use.

Qualcomm explains that mmWave connectivity has become more reliable. The mmWave ideally requires a direct link to a 5G base station, but the signal can also be received in other ways, such as when it bounces off buildings. However, it rapidly degrades with time and distance.
However, software can improve the interpreted signal and reduce errors. That is why Qualcomm has integrated an artificial intelligence processor into the modem. This is a very interesting way, because signal processing has characteristics associated with “perceptual computing”, a discipline in which artificial intelligence is extremely talented.

AI can be used to recognize certain patterns of radio waves and “correct”the signal, similar to how we use artificial intelligence to remove noise from an image, to give a fairly common use case.
In any case, it would seem that Qualcomm has managed to integrate this technology and it is to be expected that all this will develop further as data accumulates. At this stage, it is difficult to say whether it is possible to update the neural network remotely, but if so, then this can offer customers continuous improvements.
However, it will be necessary to wait until the second half of this year for the first devices equipped with this new modem to appear. Who knows, maybe we will get it from September or October. To be continued!
