Vivo partners with Jio to test its 5G network on the Vivo X80 series: are Indian telecoms finally ready for 5G on modern devices?

Vivo recently launched the Vivo X80 一 Vivo X80 and Vivo X80 Pro series smartphones in India. Both phones are now available for purchase from several online retailers and retailers across India. Now, Vivo has teamed up with network operator Jio to test the 5G network on X80 series devices. Vivo X80 Pro is equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and vanilla Vivo X80 with MediaTek Dimensity 9000.

Successful testing of X80 devices has demonstrated 5G network support, providing a faster Internet connection. Vivo says this is another step forward in building a mobile phone ecosystem for the rapid adoption of 5G technology in the country. Apart from the collaboration between Jio and Vivo, in the past we have seen Oppo also run 5G tests on its latest smartphones in India.

On the other hand, Airtel’s 5G trial network was launched last year at Mumbai’s Phoenix Mall in Lower Parel.

Will 5G become a reality in 2023?

To date, 5G is not commercially available for use in India. The 5G spectrum auction is expected to take place later this year, with 5G service likely to be introduced later this year or in 2023.

In India, most smartphone manufacturers started launching 5G capable phones a couple of years ago, and two years later, most phones over Rs 20,000 are 5G capable, and there are also a few 5G phones under Rs 20,000. With so many phones already on the market, Indian carriers are the perfect fit to launch 5G service in India. It will also ensure networks are ready to adapt to the latest smartphones.
