After a particularly long incubation period, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is almost ready for release. Daedalic has revealed that its rather beefy take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world will be available to players on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S starting May 25th. The Switch version should come later. Although the mechanics of the game are already known, this game promises a breath of fresh air, especially if you didn’t really like the previous hack-and-slash made by Monolith.

In The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, you play as Gollum in a previously untold story as he searches for, guess what, his Jewel in the opening chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring. Then he is clearly not a brawler, so he has to sneak and climb to survive. And the great battle in his tormented mind plays a decisive role. You will have to choose between letting Gollum fulfill his darkest impulses, or trying to cling to Sméagol’s kindness. And because this original story is based on the books, you’ll be reunited with familiar characters as you journey through a world inspired by Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films.
Difficult genesis for a game that could be a big success
To say that this Gollum game took some time to see the light of day is an understatement. The title was first introduced in 2019 and at the time it was not expected to arrive until 2021. 2021 has come and gone. The pandemic didn’t help the development and the launch was announced in September 2022. Unfortunately, this slot also failed to run. At that time, we learned that Daedalic still needed “a few months”to polish the final elements.
And this new timing may be working in the game’s favor, even though back in 2019 Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series was in its infancy and the last game in Tolkien’s Middle-earth universe: Shadow of War was released some time ago. In 2023, the situation is quite different. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power series has been a huge hit for Amazon, and visual effects company Weta Workshop is working on its own video game based on the franchise. Interest in this so rich knowledge seems to be growing again, and Gollum can benefit greatly from it.
