WhatsApp integrates cryptocurrency payment feature. The test is reserved for a few US users for now.
We all know that Meta – formerly Facebook – is very interested in cryptocurrencies. Some time ago, the American giant was supposed to launch its own cryptocurrency called Libra, but after facing a number of protests, the project was not successful. At least not the way it was, and the currency was finally renamed Diem, with a much reduced scope.
WhatsApp integrates a payment function in cryptocurrencies.
That being said, it looks like Meta hasn’t given up on its crypto plans just yet, as Meta’s owned WhatsApp just announced the launch of a new crypto payment feature, only in the United States and only for a small number of users – and there’s a good chance that the group will become more over time.
The payment system was put into action thanks to the integration of Novi, a digital wallet owned by Meta, and uses the Paxos Dollar stablecoin, which is directly pegged to the US dollar. In other words, you will be able to trade cryptocurrencies with other users without having to worry about fluctuations in its value, unlike other cryptocurrencies such as bitcoins and altcoins.
The test is reserved for a few US users for now.
Users can send and receive cryptocurrency payments as they send or receive files, and then they can withdraw their money to a bank where they will receive the equivalent amount in US dollars. Right now, there appear to be no fees charged on these transactions, and users can send and receive money as many times as they want.
WhatsApp is not new to these features of sending and receiving money on its platform. Such options are especially widely used in countries such as India and Brazil, but they use fiat currencies, not cryptocurrencies. So this is a first for the company, hence the fact that the number of users is currently limited. I hope one day she will come to France.
