Is Overwatch cross-platform? Play on PC, Xbox, Switch and PlayStation

Overwatch attracts gamers all over the world. This game is very popular among a wide range of gamers, from casual to professional, thanks to its cartoony style and low entry threshold for young and old.

Overwatch 2, the sequel to the long-awaited game, is still a long way off. In the meantime, players will have to be content with the original title.

However, the issue of cross-platform play has always been a problem with Blizzard’s flagship FPS.

Luckily, this shouldn’t be a problem anymore. The June 22 Overwatch patch enabled crossplay.

Let’s find out more about this.

Is Overwatch a cross-platform game of 2022?

Since the advent of cross-platform matchmaking, many developers have been working on adding it to their games. Some of the most popular games are Fortnite and PUBG.

These titles allow players to play together on different platforms. In addition, the waiting time for console players is reduced. And it significantly reduces downtime between matches.

Overwatch has been available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch since its release in 2016. However, players have long been dependent on the servers of their platforms.

Blizzard and Sony “discussed”a server merger. But nothing remarkable came out of Blizzard’s meetings with the console giants.

Thus, up until 2021, Overwatch players could not play cross-platform play.

However, a global Battle.net update in June 2021 allowed Overwatch to support cross-platform play.

Additionally, console players who have played Overwatch without Overwatch require only a Battle.net account.

Therefore, to qualify for cross-platform play, console players must first link their Battle.net accounts.

How to Link Your Console and Battle.net Accounts

You need to make sure your console is linked to your Battle.net account if you want to play with friends across platforms.

Here are the steps you need to take:

1. If you don’t have an account yet, sign up for Battle.net. If you already have an account, please sign in.

2. Click on your account name in the top right corner.

3. Click “Account Settings”from the drop-down menu.

4. Then click “Connections”.

5. Now set up a connection between Battle.net and your Xbox Live, Playstation Network, or Nintendo account.

While competitive play is excluded from crossplay, all other game modes are available in Overwatch.

And, according to the system in which they play, competitive players will be divided into two pools.

Console players will be placed in one pool and PC players in another. As such, PC and console players will not mix for competitive matches for balance reasons.

Therefore, if you play with friends on console and PC, you can only play non-competitive games together. In the PC player, the matchmaking pool consists of both PC and console players.

The matchmaking pool on consoles will not accept players with a mouse and keyboard, regardless of who is in their party.

Finally, console players will have to prove themselves against PC players without any aim assist.

So when you team up with a PC player during a match, this feature will be disabled by default.

Final words

Now you know that Overwatch does support crossplay. So, go and invite your friends from different devices and play together. Thank you for reading this article.
