YouTube Go will disappear forever next August. The YouTube team has announced that this lighter alternative to its main app will soon be retired for good, mainly because it has become less and less necessary over the years. YouTube developed the Go app for users with intermittent connections, slow speeds, very expensive data plans, or entry-level smartphones who couldn’t get the classic app to work properly.

The blog post explains that since the launch of Go in 2016, YouTube has made a large number of performance improvements and various optimizations to its core application. Among them, we note, in particular, the fact that this application works more efficiently on entry-level devices, with more than modest characteristics and even at low speeds.
The team explains that they are also currently working on new settings that will allow users to further limit the use of their data if they have limited internet access, but no one knows at this time when these features will be available to the general public. YouTube Go users are now prompted to download and install the main app, which, unlike the lite version, allows users to comment, post, create content, and use a dark theme.

YouTube Go was originally available in India and Indonesia before moving out of beta to more countries in 2017. By 2018, YouTube had rolled it out to over 130 countries to reach as many users as possible with this app that is only 10MB in size. Now is the time to say goodbye. As 9to5Google points out, this raises the question of the need for Android Go in the future. The operating system allows small smartphones to run smoother and faster, but perhaps the Android platform is now adaptable enough to run smoothly even on entry-level devices.
