Enchanting in Minecraft: what is it (explained)

Minecraft is a survival sandbox game with many interesting mechanics. In this game, you can collect a wide range of resources and use them to create a lot of things. These include equipment such as weapons, tools, and armor. As you progress through the game, you will find stronger and more durable resources and ways to collect them. However, they also die after using them for a while. Luckily, you can enchant them to last longer or get more resources. This guide will walk you through the mechanics of Enchantability in Minecraft.

What is enchantment in Minecraft

Enchantment in Minecraft is an attribute that tells how likely an item is to receive a high-level enchantment. Simply put, the higher the enchantability, the higher the chance of getting better enchantments. Unfortunately, this mechanic depends on the durability of the item. This means that if an item has low durability, then it will have a higher enchantment ability. And since gold items are the least durable in the game, they are the most likely to get the best enchantments. Enchantments like Sharpness 5, Potency 5, and Indestructibility 3 will naturally apply to gold items without an anvil.

To better understand this, here is a table of enchantability for items and their materials:

MaterialArmor Swords/Tools
WoodN/A15
Leather15N/A
StoneN/A5
Iron914
Chain12N/A
Diamond1010
Gold2522
Book11

As you can see, golden tools have an enchantability of 22, while diamond tools have an enchantability of 10. So if you apply the Efficiency enchantment to both tools, the golden tool will give you better results than the diamond tool. However, this is a double-edged sword, as gold tools are short-lived. They will break faster than diamond ones and you will have to create them and re-enchant them. This can result in the loss of both your materials and enchantment books.
