Apple updates AirTag firmware to version 2.0.24

The Apple AirTag software has been updated. Find out what’s new in AirTag v.2.0.24 firmware and how to install it on your personal tracker.

  • What is happening? Apple has released an updated AirTag firmware with version number 2.0.24 and build number 2A24e.
  • Why care? These updates may bring new features, but we don’t know if that’s the case because Apple didn’t provide release notes for the latest firmware.
  • What to do? Leave the AirTag in range of your iPhone’s Bluetooth.

What’s new in AirTag firmware version 2.0.24

A new AirTag software with version number 2.0.24 and build number 2A24e has been released, replacing the previous firmware (version number 1.0.301, build number 1A301), although you will need to wait for this to happen on its own.

Sometimes these updates are known to bring new features.

For example, the unwanted tracking sound was changed in the previous firmware to make it easier to find an unknown AirTag. At the time of writing, it was unclear whether the new v2.0.24 update includes any such tweaks and feature improvements or not.

The support document on Apple’s website describing what’s new in firmware updates for AirTag has also not been updated. The new firmware is being rolled out in phases, so expect the rollout to complete in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on this space because we will update the article when the update changelog becomes available.

How to update AirTag firmware

You cannot update the AirTag software manually. Apple says AirTag updates are “delivered periodically,”meaning they are delivered to customers in stages to minimize the impact of any critical bugs. Read: How to reset AirTag to factory settings

You can’t speed up this process either, so keep the AirTag within range of your iPhone’s Bluetooth so that the new firmware installs as soon as it’s downloaded.

How to Check AirTag Firmware Version

However, you can check the currently installed version if you want to make sure the software your AirTag is running is up to date or not.

To do this, open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and select the Items tab, then select your AirTag from the list to go to the dashboard.

The firmware number will be hidden, but you can show it by tapping the tracker name right above the AirTag battery icon. Apple recently removed this badge, but don’t worry – when you tap on your AirTag’s actual name, you’ll see the serial number and firmware number.
