Google CEO Sundar Pichai seems to think that Google can become a more focused company. CNBC reports that the executive recently called a general meeting and, saying the company is “currently”not planning a layoff, said he wants a more efficient Google.
“There are real concerns that our overall performance is not up to par with the number of employees we have,” Pichai said in the report. The CEO added that he wants to “create a culture that is more mission-driven, more product-driven, more customer-driven. We need to think about how to minimize distractions and really raise the bar for both product quality and productivity.”

At the meeting, Pichai announced the “Sprint on Simplicity”program to get feedback from employees. The program includes a survey asking questions such as “What will help you work with greater clarity and efficiency in order to serve our users and customers? Where should we remove speed bumps to get better results faster? How do we eliminate waste and stay entrepreneurial and focused as we grow?”

It is difficult to say exactly what Pichai’s main goals are. You can build a “two in all”narrative with many of the keywords used to describe Pichai’s recent changes, but Pichai’s vague “efficiency”statements make it hard to pinpoint exactly what’s changing.
