Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Jim Ryan has assured Destiny fans and fans of Bungie games in general that all of the studio’s future titles will remain multi-platform. One of the biggest highlights of this recent acquisition of Bungie by SIE is the studio’s and Sony’s commitment to keeping Bungie’s projects multi-platform.
“The first thing to be clear is that Bungie will remain an independent multi-platform studio and publisher. Pete [Parsons, CEO] and I have been talking about a lot of things over the past months and this was one of the first, and actually the simplest and simplest conclusion we came to together,” SIE CEO Jim Ryan said in an interview. GamesIndustry.biz.
While on the one hand this means there won’t be any PS5 exclusive games from Bungie, on the other hand it allows SIE to create live service online games across multiple platforms. The studio has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt what sustained success a live service game like Destiny and its sequel can bring.
In addition to the Bungie acquisition, Jim Ryan also indicated that there may be other acquisitions in the future.
SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) CEO Jim Ryan hints at new post-Bungie acquisitions
Recently, SIE and the PlayStation brand have moved away from console exclusivity, moving some of their most popular IPs to other platforms like PC. Bungie’s recent acquisition shows that SIE is moving forward in its quest to offer more live service online games across multiple platforms.
In the same GamesIndustry.biz interview, Jim Ryan also hinted that there may be more acquisitions ahead of us.
“We are by no means finished. We have a long way to go with PlayStation. I personally will spend a lot of time with Pete and the Bungie team helping to make sure everything fits right and that autonomy means autonomy. But in other parts of the organization, we still have many steps to take,” he concluded.
There has been a lot of speculation as to which studios might be next on the SIE radar, but there has been no official word on the matter. It will be interesting to see how this pans out and which studios Sony acquires next.
