Google is reportedly working on an augmented reality headset. Google and Apple must (again) compete.
If the rumors are true, we should see Apple formalize its own mixed reality device in late 2022. The Cupertino-based company has been working for a long time on a pair of augmented reality glasses that could eventually completely replace the iPhone. The mixed reality device in question will be the first product of this great initiative. Google hasn’t been far behind either.
Google is working on an augmented reality headset
Indeed, the apple brand can have competition. Competition from Google, to be precise. According to a recent report by The Verge, several sources have told him that the American giant will be working on its own augmented reality device, a product that will currently live up to the code name Project Iris.
The report also claims that several prototypes are currently being tested at the Google Center in San Francisco Bay. Currently in Google’s “chosen”form, the device looks like ski goggles and doesn’t require a wired connection to work. If this information is correct, this won’t be Google’s first attempt at a headset.
Google and Apple must (again) compete
Mountain View was talked about, and not only for good, a few years ago when it released its Google Glasses, but the product didn’t end up being sold to the general public. Google has also tried to intervene in the VR market with its Google Cardboard, but again, the reaction has been mixed. At this stage, it’s hard to say whether Apple and Google will have better luck with augmented reality this time around, but perhaps the general public today is more ready for this kind of technology than it seemed 6 or 7 years ago. Will have to wait for an answer.
