Microsoft poached another semiconductor developer from Apple

A fresh start on the Apple semiconductor team. Mike Filippo is going to design chips at Microsoft.

Brain drain is a real problem for a number of companies, especially tech giants. While it is very common for one company to hire an employee from another company, some corporations find it difficult to retain their best employees. Apple has been struggling in this area lately. Today is a new example.

A New Beginning at Apple’s Semiconductor Team

In order for the Cupertino company to realize its Apple Silicon project, it must have a team of talented designers and engineers in its ranks to develop its own electronic chips. Recently, one of the Apple brand’s executive engineers left the company to join Intel, and today we have to add what seems to be an important new start.

Mike Filippo is going to develop chips at Microsoft

If a Bloomberg report is to be believed, citing a source familiar with the matter, it appears that the Cupertino-based company has just lost an important new member of its semiconductor team, and this time to Microsoft. The report alleges that semiconductor designer Mike Filippo has left Apple to join a firm in Redmond, where he will help design chips expected to be used in Azure cloud computing services.

Microsoft is currently facing stiff competition in the cloud computing market, especially from Google and Amazon. Therefore, it is understandable that the American giant is always looking to expand its offer, and this, in particular, is due to the creation of its own components that will help to stand out from the competition. Mike Filippo joined Apple in 2019 as a chip architect.

Prior to that, he worked for ARM as a designer for a long time. Mike Filippo has also been active at Intel and AMD. Again, it’s hard to say how much the departure of this employee will affect the great Apple Silicon project. Only time can tell us. In any case, let’s hope that the Cupertino company has a trick up its sleeve.
