Qualcomm is working with Microsoft on a chip for augmented reality glasses

Microsoft is teaming up with Qualcomm to develop a chip for augmented reality glasses.

We all know for a long time that Microsoft is very interested in wearable devices. After all, Redmond has already developed the HoloLens mixed reality headset. At the same time, against the backdrop of growing rumors about Apple’s imminent entry into this market, competition is heating up. Microsoft and Qualcomm have already decided to work together to move forward faster.

Microsoft joins forces with Qualcomm to develop chip

In an announcement made during Qualcomm’s keynote at CES 2022, the US company said it will work with Microsofot to develop a custom chip that will be used to power future augmented reality glasses.

According to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, “Today we are announcing that we are working on the development of an augmented reality-adapted Snapdragon chip for energy-efficient and ultra-light next-generation augmented reality glasses for the ecosystem. will integrate both companies’ software into this platform: the Microsoft Mesh platform and the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces XR development platform.”

This is not the first collaboration between Redmond and Qualcomm. Microsoft has worked with Qualcomm in the past, and this allowed the SQ1 chip built into the Surface Pro X to hit the market.

No one knows when these glasses or this headset will appear, because the boundaries are very different, but if the rumors are true and Apple is really working on its own headset, it will be very interesting to see how the chips are produced by Qualcomm can keep up with Cupertino’s own chips.
