Apple will test at least nine Mac models with the M2 chip. Everyone may not see the light of day.
Apple may soon release several new Macs based on its own next-generation chips. The tech giant has begun testing at least nine Mac models with four different M2 chips, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, which suggests the Cupertino-based company is gearing up for a full launch.

While the information isn’t supposed to be public, the Apple brand is testing the machines with third-party apps from the App Store, and the developer logs for those apps give us an idea of what to expect from these future machines.
One of the devices currently being tested will be the M2-chip MacBook Air, which has an 8-core processor and 10 graphics cores, versus 8 in total for the current model. Previous reports have suggested that the next MacBook Air will feature a major design change, reportedly with an even thinner chassis, more ports, and MagSafe charging. The Cupertino-based company will also be testing several Mac minis based on the M2 and M2 Pro chips, as well as an entry-level MacBook Pro M2 with the same specs as the previously mentioned MacBook Air.
Everyone may not see the light of day
Apple released 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros last October, but Mark Gurman says the company has launched new 14- and 16-inch models with 64GB of memory and M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The M2 Max will even have 12 CPU cores and 38 graphics cores, up from 10 and 32 respectively for current models. There is finally a new Mac Pro that will be the successor to the M1 Ultra chip. The most recent release is Apple’s most powerful chip to date and is currently integrated into Mac Studio. However, Mark Gurman warns that there is no guarantee that the Apple brand will sell all the models it is currently testing. That said, the new MacBook Air, Mac mini, and entry-level MacBook Pro are expected to be released before the end of this year.
