Unity Technologies selects Microsoft Azure as cloud partner

Microsoft becomes Unity Technologies’ cloud partner for Azure to help create and manage real-time 3D environments.

The collaboration between Unity Technologies (to be merged with ironSource) and US giant Microsoft comes at a time when the Unity engine allows developers to easily access RT3D modeling tools and create digital twins of real-world places and objects. This often involves using a technical infrastructure that Microsoft believes is best suited to the Azure cloud platform.

We’re excited to announce today a partnership with Microsoft to develop a cloud infrastructure that will enable game developers and 3D artists around the world to take advantage of the power of Azure. Learn more about this partnership. https://t.co/HohHo1joFg

Sarah Bond, Head of Xbox Experience and Ecosystem at Microsoft, is thrilled to bring game creators, artists and developers around the world the power of the cloud and the power of Unity:

Our drive to democratize the development of games and related products around the world and in all industries depends on strong partnerships, especially with game engines like Unity. Microsoft’s partnership with Unity will also make it easier for creators of Made with Unity games to reach their players on Windows devices and Xbox consoles and open up new opportunities for success. By developing better development tools, leveraging the latest platform innovations from silicon to the cloud, and simplifying the publishing process, Unity creators can make their dreams come true and bring their games to more players around the world.

Unity x Azure: cloud infrastructure for developers

Mark Witten, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Unity, wants to move his creative solutions to the cloud and grow cloud infrastructure with Microsoft Azure to better serve user needs and improve the gaming experience:

We’re committed to building custom features that open our tools to more people than ever before, so you can take advantage of the advanced computing, storage, and reliability that the cloud offers. We believe this cloud-based implementation will allow creators around the world to collaborate seamlessly. It will also allow for features that would not be possible if they were limited to the local resources of the creator’s machine or the user’s platform. Unity already has many cloud-based tools and services such as Parsec, DevOps, Weta Digital, and Digital Twins. Many of our tools are already heavily used in cloud workflows, from PIXYZ to Unity Headless Rendering.
